This picture is of Sennosuke Kataoka, a young Kabuki star in Japan. His career began at birth, as his family have been Kabuki actors for the past 15 generations. One of his missions is to make Kabuki more popular for a younger audience. Although Kabuki has existed for over 400 years, it is struggling to stay relevant in our digital age. It was amazing seeing him perform and leaping into the air with this outfit on. Very mesmerizing.

The time I went blond. To mark my 50th birthday I dyed my hair bleach blond. I felt I had to do something drastic, and it was a real change. People say blondes have more fun, and maybe there is some truth to it! This picture is during my second Versace campaign with Madonna in 2004, who is also very blonde here. She gave me the incredible opportunity to do my first Versace campaign when Gianni was still alive. It changed my career drastically!

I am always curious about what I don t know. Growing up, I could not help being different. My way of dressing, my attitude, my way of viewing things were just not like others around me. I am always searching for different looks, attitudes, and backgrounds. It is the only way to learn and grow. By embracing what we don t know, we find new paths. Who knows where they may take us.

Today we remember our dear friend Oribe Canales. He was one of the most important hairdressers in the fashion business. I met Oribe in the early 80 s in NY when I was just starting out. He introduced me to the store Parachute, which landed me my first advertising job in America. Later, I booked him for a small job for American Vogue, for the stories at the front of the magazine. My editor was Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, who totally loved him and started booking him for everything. Sadly that meant I lost my hairdresser, but I was happy he went his own way, and became a huge star. Luckily we went back to work together in the later years. He was a genius in his fearless vision. He looked at someone and just knew how to bring out the best in them, like you see in this @vanityfair picture. Every girl looks amazing in their own way. He loved women and life. Glamour and style. It is so sad to have lost him. I miss him a lot.

Hoy recordamos a nuestro querido Oribe Canales. Oribe fue uno de los peluqueros más geniales en el negocio de la moda. Lo conocí a principios de los 80 en Nueva York cuando recién comenzaba. Me presentó a la tienda Parachute, mi primer trabajo publicitario en Estados Unidos! Más tarde, lo llamé para un pequeño trabajo para American Vogue, para las historias que van al inicio de la revista. Mi editora era Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele; lo amó totalmente y comenzó a llamarlo para todo. Eso significaba perder a mi peluquero, pero yo estaba feliz de que siguiera su propio camino y de verlo convertirse en una gran estrella. Afortunadamente volvimos a trabajar juntos. Era un genio de visión intrépida. Miraba a alguien y sabía cómo sacar lo mejor, tal como se ve en esta foto. Cada chica se ve increíble a su manera. Amaba a las mujeres y a la vida. Glamour y estilo. Es muy triste haberlo perdido. Lo extraño mucho.

I took this picture in Myanmar last year, when I met Shine Htet and his friends. I planned to visit the country to photograph the different tribes and their traditions, but when I was in Yangon I heard about the local Punk scene. I was totally surprised by them. Their looks were very interesting and different, even reminding me of the Chin people of Myanmar, with their facial decorations. They also have a charity called food not bombs where they feed the homeless. I talk more about this picture and my new work in this month s @ICON.Magazin.

Tomé esta foto en Myanmar el año pasado, cuando conocí a Shine Htet y a sus amigos. Planeaba visitar el país para fotografiar las diferentes tribus y sus tradiciones, pero cuando estuve en Yangon escuché sobre la escena punk local. Me parecieron increíbles. Eran muy diferentes, incluso me recordaban a la gente Chin de Myanmar, con sus decoraciones faciales. When I went to carnival in Rio one year, like I try to do every year, I went to my usual spot but guess who I found? Gisele! I could not believe it. It was her first carnival. The incredible energy that the carnival has, with its millions of people and the drums of the samba, gets everyone get in the mood of party and hysteria. I just had to shoot and shoot. I could not stop photographing her love for life. She was beyond herself with happiness. When I did my book on Rio, called MaRio de Janeiro Testino, I had to put her on the cover.

Cuando fui al carnaval de Río un año, como intento hacer todos los años, fui a mi lugar habitual, y adivinen con quién me encontré? Con Gisele! No lo podía creer. Y era su primer carnaval! La energía que tiene el carnaval, con millones de personas bailando y los tambores de la samba, es increíble; hace que todos se pongan de humor de fiesta e histeria. Yo solo tenía que tomar y tomar fotos. No podía dejar de fotografiar la forma que tiene Gisele de disfrutar la vida. Ella estaba más allá de sí de felicidad. Cuando hice mi libro sobre Río, llamado MaRio de Janeiro Testino, tuvo que ser la portada.
